The Eastern Bays coastline is home to protected native bird species including the tōrea pango (variable oystercatcher) and kororā (little blue penguins). Protection of these birds and their habitat is an important part of the Tupua Horo Nuku project.
-
our vision & mission
Ngā manu o Tupua Horo Nuku (Birds of Tupua Horo Nuku) strives to raise awareness of the environment and wildlife in the Eastern Bays while supporting and promoting awareness of community-led conservation projects.

Bird Protection Areas
As part of the environmental measures of Tupua Horo Nuku, Bird Protection Area are being established along the foreshore of the Eastern Bays. With the support of the community and specialist ecologists, we will create nesting habitat for kororā and oystercatchers to continue thriving Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
